In the 1980s, in the Agrigento area, the fates of magistrate Rosario Livatino and a group of young “stiddari”—who had grown up in poverty and were drawn to crime as a path to redemption—intersect. Livatino fights Mafia power by targeting its assets, economic interests, and roots in the local community, while the stiddari advance throughout the province, gaining ground and support. In a narrative chiasm that pits law against violence, justice against oppression, the two paths converge until September 21, 1990, when a Stidda hit squad assassinates the magistrate. His testimony of justice and faith would make him a symbol of the fight against the Mafia and the first magistrate in history to be proclaimed blessed by the Catholic Church.
