Andrea Vitali’s literary universe is a microcosm that recreates Bellamo—a real yet imaginary town—on the shores of Lake Como. The stories in his novels—beloved by countless readers, not just in Italy—depict a “small world” in northern Italy—in the vein of Downton Abbey, Broadchurch, and the like—inhabited by quirky and comical characters, sometimes unsettling, sometimes hilarious. We enter this world through the eyes of a young Carabinieri marshal, Ernesto Maccadò, who, in the early 1930s, receives his first assignment as commander of a station in Bellamo. He arrives there from his native Calabria with his beloved wife, Maristella, and a suitcase full of dreams and doubts—about himself and his ability to adapt to a town where, as he will soon discover, it won’t be easy to be accepted. Through stories that are at times dramatic and at times surreal—from the love story between two women in *Nome d’arte Doris Brilli* to the bull on the loose in the town of *Certe fortune*, from the unexpected complications of an extramarital affair in *Un uomo in mutande* to the bizarre connections between the theft of a small painting depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the death of a fearsome loan shark in *La signorina Tecla Manzi*—we’ll follow Ernesto’s coming-of-age story, his wife Maristella, and little Vinicio, an orphan in search of a family. But also Sergeant Letterio Misfatti, a sort of Sicilian Virgil who, along with his wife Agata, will accompany his superior on a journey to discover the most hidden corners of Bellamo and the most unexpected secrets of its inhabitants. The journey will be fraught with obstacles, and in the end, Maccadò will come to believe he has failed in his mission, almost to the point of requesting a transfer. But are we sure that’s the right solution? The series aims to paint a portrait of a “small, old-fashioned world” that is nonetheless extremely relevant today, exploring the dynamics that make human relationships often unpredictable and amusing, yet always deeply human.
