Dean Barry, an American veteran who abandoned a pregnant girl in Naples after the war, receives a telegram with the news that she has died, and so decides to return to Italy to meet his son.
Dean believes it is possible to make up for twenty-five years of absence, but his son is now a man and has grown up in the criminal underworld.
