Il Mestiere, directed by Beppe Tufarulo, tells the story of Sauro Cantafame (Luigi Lo Cascio), a man marked by a difficult past, with a solitary character, closed off in his own pain.
His work is out of the ordinary: on request, he restores a semblance of life to the dead, implanting mechanical hearts in their bodies, as if they were machines to be revived. Aboard his Ape van, he travels through a wild South, suspended between reality and legend, made up of silence, violence, and undefined boundaries.
However, everything changes when he meets Giocondo, a boy who lives in a world of his own but is gifted with a mysterious talent. It is this unexpected bond that shakes Sauro out of his emotional torpor, awakening feelings in him and the possibility of a new life. But to protect him, he will be forced to challenge Vito la Scimmia, an almost mythical figure who fiercely dominates that strip of land forgotten by God.
