Green Animation: a Global Industry Collaboration

June 12, 2025

To promote green practices in the animation industry, Ecoprod, Green Film and CineRegio (the European network of regional film funds) have formed a collective initiative dedicated to promoting sustainable practices in the animation industry. This initiative includes CEE Animation, Animation Scotland and several regional film funds: ALCA (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), Catalonia Film Commission – ICEC, EC1 Łódź Film Commission, Film London, Film Paris Region, Screen Scotland, Trentino Film Commission and Viken Filmsenter.

The initiative’s first achievement is the release of the Green Animation Guide, the first international reference guide for sustainable practices in animation. This landmark tool has been unveiled at the Annecy International Animation Film Market (Mifa). This guide marks a critical step towards the creation of a global certification framework and dedicated tools for green animation production, supporting a future of more sustainable, inclusive and collaborative co-productions.

Launch of the Green Animation Guide in Annecy

The result of an unprecedented collaborative effort, the Green Animation Guide is designed to support animation professionals across the globe in reducing their environmental footprint while strengthening ethical, resilient production models. The guide addresses all stages of the animation pipeline, across 2D and 3D. It builds on the success of the French guide launched in 2023, by Ecoprod, and La Cartouch’Verte in partnership with Anim’France now expanded and adapted to serve the international animation community.

An International collaborative milestone

Designed as a practical tool, the Green Animation Guide brings together internationally-sourced data and case studies to illustrate the current state of green practices across the animation sector. Over 100 animation professionals from around the globe have provided insights and real-life examples to highlight both challenges and solutions, and to showcase diverse approaches to sustainability across different production contexts.

The Green Animation Guide provides peer-driven actionable recommendations tailored to the specific needs of studios, producers and artists, enabling them to implement meaningful changes adapted to their realities. By offering a shared vocabulary and a coherent framework, the guide facilitates dialogue and cooperation across countries and production systems. It delivers detailed guidance on key areas such as green coordination, energy management, IT infrastructure, production workflows, equipment, mobility, waste management and more. The Guide can be downloaded on the Green Film website:

Towards shared standards for animation

While live-action productions increasingly adopt standardized sustainability protocols, the animation industry has yet to benefit from an equivalent framework. To fill this gap, Ecoprod, Green Film and CineRegio will launch a dedicated international working group this summer. Its mission: to develop a set of practical, verifiable, and adaptable criteria that can serve as a common standard for the sector.

These set of criteria will represent a reference framework outlining key actions to reduce the environmental impact of animation workflows. They will also support the creation of a scalable certification scheme that will act as a White Label, helping studios of all sizes track progress and gain recognition for their sustainability efforts, while fostering creativity, innovation and cross-sector cooperation.

Crucially, this process acknowledges the diversity of production capacities and cultural contexts across regions. The standard is being designed to be flexible and inclusive, enabling studios to engage with sustainability at their own pace. The goal is to ensure that no territory, no creative voice, and no production model is left behind in the global transition toward sustainable animation.

The set of criteria will be drafted by sustainability and industry experts and will be open to public consultation and beta testing by the end of 2025.

Stakeholders across the industry are encouraged to show their support and shape the future of sustainable animation by signing the “Statement for European Sustainability Standards in Animation” endorsement form :
