Green Film’s 2024 at a glance

December 20, 2024

For Green Film, the much anticipated moment of the year has arrived, when conclusions are drawn, results are assessed, and a review is made of what has occurred during the solar year.

Let’s review together the most important events and achievements:

  • Updated Green Film rating system: after a public consultation at the European level involving all Green Film stakeholders, particularly the international network of partners, institutions, film funds, producers, industry associations, sustainability and green managers, and verification bodies, the year-long process culminated in the drafting of a new Green Film guideline. The new edition of the Green Film rating system, presented during the 81st Venice Film Festival, enhances effectiveness in terms of clarity, accessibility, and sustainability, while also integrating the findings from the comparative LCA analysis conducted by Green Film Research Lab in 2022. The new criteria also address other forms of sustainability beyond the environmental one.
  • The 2024 report confirms the potential expressed in previous years, with consistently growing numbers and certified productions across Europe (Italy, Denmark, Spain, Belgium, Finland, Poland, Ireland, and, for the first time, also in Iceland, Croatia, and Portugal).
  • The initiatives related to certification continue to grow in number, including informational panels, awards, and workshops across Europe. The sustainability partnerships with MIA remain confirmed – this year, it hosted the meeting ‘Towards a More Socially Sustainable and Productive Industry,’ where, for the first time, the topic of crew well-being on sets was addressed – and with TorinoFilmLab, with two stages of the international Green Film Lab workshop in Athens and Glasgow, as well as the 5th edition of the Green Filming Award. A new collaboration with EUFCN led to the creation of a sustainability course dedicated to film commissions, ‘It’s Green or Never – Essential for Film Commissioners.’
  • In 2024, Green Film, together with EcoProd and CineRegio, launched a European working group to promote sustainable practices in the animation industry, working together to develop a Green Animation Guide for international use, with the goal of advancing toward a common international certification system.

We bid farewell to this year full of achievements with an exceptional piece of news: Asturias Paraíso Natural Film Commission has joined the network of Green Film partners
