The 83rd Venice International Film Festival provided the ideal stage for the final event of GREEN SCAP – Green Skills for Cinema and Audiovisual Production, bringing together project partners, tutors, sustainability experts, industry professionals and participants to celebrate the outcomes of an ambitious European training programme dedicated to the future of sustainable filmmaking.
Hosted by Veneto Film Commission at the Hotel Excelsior, the event offered an opportunity to look back at the key milestones of a journey that, over the last months, connected environmental expertise and audiovisual production through a unique international learning experience spanning Italy, Greece and Spain.
Through a combination of online learning, international workshops and practical project work, Green SCAP was designed to equip sustainability professionals with the specialised skills needed to support audiovisual productions in embedding sustainability in their projects.
Participants engaged with real case studies, sustainability planning exercises and best practices from across Europe, developing both technical expertise and valuable professional networks.
One of the most inspiring aspects of the final event was hearing directly from the participants themselves. They highlighted how Green SCAP successfully brought together professionals from different countries, backgrounds and disciplines, creating a collaborative environment where knowledge could be shared and new perspectives could emerge. Their experiences demonstrated that sustainability in the audiovisual industry is not only a technical challenge, but also a collective effort that requires dialogue, cooperation and continuous learning.
The programme’s tutors also reflected on the importance of professionals capable of bridging the gap between environmental sustainability and film production. As the industry continues to embrace greener practices, dedicated expertise and international cooperation are becoming increasingly essential to drive meaningful change.
The panel was chaired by Luigi Bacialli, President of Veneto Film Commission, and contributions were delivered by Jacopo Chessa, CEO of Veneto Film Commission; Kallitsa Pantazi, Head of the Department of European Projects and Synergies of the Region of Central Macedonia; Linnea Merzagora, Green Film Manager and Green SCAP curator and lecturer; Serena Alfieri, producer and head tutor; Angeliki-Lina Milonaki, Head of Film Office Central Macedonia; Pedro Barbadillo, Project Manager at Powerhouse Mediterranean Creative Hub; and Claudio Savelli, Sustainability Manager and Green SCAP lecturer.
Beyond celebrating the project’s achievements, the event also reinforced the importance of international collaboration. Green SCAP has shown how organisations from different European regions can work together to address common challenges, exchange expertise and co-create innovative training models that respond to the evolving needs of the audiovisual sector.
The partnerships, methodologies and professional connections established throughout the project will continue to support the dissemination of best practices and contribute to a more sustainable film industry across Europe.
