Age and Scarpelli—the collaborative pen name of Agenore Incrocci and Furio Scarpelli—were among the greatest screenwriters in the history of cinema. Their films, stories, and unforgettable characters have shaped the collective imagination and half a century of Italian social history like few others. Their cultural and artistic legacy remains profound and enduring. Creating a film about the duo is both a necessary tribute and an opportunity to explore and shed light on a crucial chapter in the history of cinema, offering a new perspective on 20th-century Italian society and its evolving customs. With more than 120 screenplays to their credit, they collaborated with the most prominent Italian directors—from Monicelli, Risi, Comencini, Germi, and Sergio Leone to their dear friend Ettore Scola—and earlier with Blasetti, Gallone, and Mastrocinque. Later, Scarpelli also worked with a new generation of directors, including Marco Risi, Virzì, d’Alò, Archibugi, Troisi, and Radford. Together, Age and Scarpelli earned five Oscar nominations, becoming some of the most internationally respected Italian screenwriters. Their films often addressed social and political themes, offering sharp and ironic portraits of postwar Italy. “Riusciranno i nostri eroi” aims to explore the historical and cultural context in which they worked, showing how their stories reflected and responded to the transformations of postwar Italy and how generations of viewers and filmmakers have been shaped by their worldview. Their collaboration was defined by a masterful blend of comedy and drama, rooted in the belief that laughter and tears are inseparable. Their lively, down-to-earth, and irresistible dialogue created iconic characters and unforgettable situations. A documentary about the duo would not only examine the distinctive traits of their narrative style but also highlight how their approach to writing influenced Italian and international cinema.
